Dr. Malak Abed AlThagafi

Assistant Research professor - King Abdulaziz city for science and technology

Biography

Dr. AlThagafi is an American board-certified Physician and Scientist in Clinical Pathology, Anatomical Pathology, Neuropathology, and Molecular Genetics Pathology. Currently, Dr. Althagafi serves as the Director and Primary Investigator of the Saudi Human Genome Lab at King Fahad Medical City (KFMC) in Riyadh, and serves as Consultant in KFMC in the subspecialty of molecular genetics and neuropathology. She also holds the appointment of Assistant Research Professor at King Abdulaziz City of Science and Technology (KACST), and serves as a part-time faculty member at Harvard Medical School, as well as being a consultant and primary investigator at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts.

Her clinical and research interests have mainly been in surgical oncology pathology, molecular genetics pathology and neuropathology, and their application in neuro-oncology. Throughout her career, she has pursued her research and studies in several world-renowned universities, such as Georgetown University, University of California, San Francisco, Stanford University, John Hopkins University, and Harvard University. Her research has led to over 50 publications and led to several national and international awards in her field, including the MIT-Sci-Tec ASO in 2015, and the Makkah Scientific Award in 2016. Dr. AlThagafi is also the co-founder of Center for Individualized Diagnostics, a genomics-based startup company. She is passionate about improving the application of personalized medicine and targeted therapy, which can be utilized in the clinical management of patients.
