Dr. Nawal Al-Hamad

Deputy Director, Assistant Undersecretary - Public Authority of Food and Nutrition

Biography

Dr. Al-Hamad was appointed Deputy Director for Community Nutrition in the Public Authority for Food and Nutrition in May of 2015. She is a Consultant Nutritionist consulted as a nutrition adviser at the national, regional and at the Eastern Mediterranean Regional Office of the World Health Organization (EMRO-WHO). She has held the position of Director of the Food and Nutrition Administration (FNA) at the Ministry of Health, from 2001 to 2015. This office is under the Under Secretary for Public Health, at the Ministry of Health, responsible for providing Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) and catering services to patients in hospitals.

Dr Al-Hamad graduated from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland in 1983. After 4 years of clinical practice in medicine, Dr. Nawal returned to the United Kingdom where she joined the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, University of London, and received her Master’s Degree followed by a doctoral degree in Human Nutrition in 1992 and 1999 respectively. Success stories related to public health nutrition has been achieved as a result of collaborative efforts with several sectors in the country such as the Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research, Ministry of Trade and Industry, Municipality and the Medical school as well as international agencies such as World Health Organization, Centers for Disease Control, among others. This has allowed for the sharing of knowledge, gaining of experience, achieving optimal health and minimizing health risks in the population.
