John C. Mankins

Biography

John C. Mankins is President of Artemis Innovation Management Solutions LLC and of Mankins Space Technology, Inc. He is Vice President of the Board for the Moon Village Association, and a member of the Boards for the National Space Society and SPACE Canada. Mankins was formerly Chief Technologist for Human Exploration and Development of Space at NASA HQ. His 25-year career at NASA and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory ranged from flight projects and space mission operations, to systems-level innovation and technology management. He planned, proposed, and managed the Exploration Systems Research & Technology program with a $4B+ budget ($850M/yr) and is recognized as the leading expert in the field of space solar power. Building on the 1970s ‘technology readiness level’ scale, he published the first detailed definitions of the TRLs in 1995, and created the Integrated Technology Readiness and Risk Assessment. Mankins holds B.S. (Harvey Mudd College) and M.S. (UCLA) degrees in Physics and an MBA in Public Policy Analysis (The Drucker School). He is a member of the International Academy of Astronautica. He received the NASA Exceptional Technology Achievement Medal and the National Space Society “Space Pioneer” Award. He lives on a family Ranch on the California Central Coast.
