Biography

Mohammad Khajah is an associate research scientist at the Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research (KISR). Dr. Khajah is interested in developing interpretable computational models of learning and engagement. Models of student learning provide further insight on how students learn material over time—allowing us to gently guide them along the learning curve—while models of engagement can accelerate the development of casual and educational video games using efficient experimentation techniques. Dr. Khajah’s work on learning models has been awarded the cognitive modeling prize from the Cognitive Science society, and the best paper award (twice) from the Educational Data Mining society. He earned his PhD in Computer Science in 2017 from the University of Colorado Boulder, where his thesis focused on optimizing engagement in casual and educational applications via nonparametric Bayesian models and novel manipulations of difficulty, tension, and perceived performance. Since joining KISR, Dr. Khajah has been working on building machine learning capacity by initiating projects with focus on data analysis. He is currently working on disease prediction using the structural features of gene network.
