Bertrand Badie

- Head of the Research Master’s in International Relations and of the Doctoral Program in Political Science of International Relations at Sciences Po. - Bertrand Badie is a graduate of the Paris Institut d’Etudes Politiques and the Institut National des Langues et Civilisations Orientales.

Biography

He is a professor and holds a PhD in political science. His research focuses on sociology and the theory of international relations, comparative politics, multilateralism, international public opinion, the evolution of States and sovereignty in international relations, as well as political culture. His academic career started at Université Paris I-Panthéon Sorbonne, where he worked as an assistant lecturer (1974-77) then as an assistant professor (1977-82), before becoming a full professor at Université d’Auvergne-Clermont-Ferrand I (1982-90). During that period, he was also a lecturer at the Institut National des Langues et Civilisations Orientales (1975-1990) as well as at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales (1987-1990). Lecturer then professor at the Paris Institut d’Etudes Politiques since 1990, Bertrand Badie was also editor of the Press collections of the same institute from 1994 to 2003. Additionally, he has been head of the international relations higher education department at this institute since 1999. Bertrand Badie was President of the scientific board of the Institut Français du Proche-Orient from 2006 to 2013, and member of its executive board (since 2003), as well as Vice-President (2006-2010) of the International Political Science Association. He also chaired the examining board of the national political science competitive examinations in 2012-13. Bertrand Badie has authored almost forty publications, including La diplomatie des droits de l’Homme (2002), L’impuissance de la puissance : essai sur les incertitudes et les espoirs des nouvelles relations internationales (2004), Le multilatéralisme (2007), International Encyclopedia of Political Science (in coll.), 2011, Le temps des humiliés. Pathologie des relations internationales (2014), Nous ne sommes plus seuls au monde (2016), Quand le Sud réinvente le monde (2018), L’hégémonie contestée (2019), Handbook of Political Science (in coll 2020) and Rethinking International Relations, his most recent book, published in 2020.
