In this session, we will discuss some of the ethical dilemmas of leadership. One of these challenges is organizational and industry environments with both prosocial and antisocial actors, and unclear signals of others’ character and likely actions. We will discuss the career consequences of personal ethics, and scientifically validated techniques of detecting dishonesty in others.
Another leadership challenge is how to balance the strategic need to be effective in mass communication with one’s own moral identity and desire to use techniques high in transparency and legitimacy. We will address how to recognize three key types of disingenuous persuasive techniques (association, repetition, and rhetoric), how to avoid being influenced by them. Finally, we will debate whether or not there are contexts in which using such psychological tricks of persuasion yourself is ethically acceptable. Location: Kuwait Economic Society
