Professor Farhan, is the Head of Physics Department at Kuwait University, and the Director of Research at Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences. She also serves as a Senior Advisor to Director General at KFAS and on the Board of Trustees of the Jaber Al-Ahmed Center for Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging.
With a career that spanned for over three decades, Professor Farhan occupied various roles at the Faculty of Sciences at Kuwait University prior to her current role as Head of the Physics Department, including Vice Dean for Research and Laboratories Affairs. Her research interests include Nuclear Structure and Astrophysics, Nuclear Data Evaluation, and Environmental Radioactivity, where her contributions have led to several publications in these fields. She is passionate about, and is an advocate for, physics education, especially through promotion and enhancement at the undergraduate and graduate level.
Professor Farhan has served on several national and international committees. At Kuwait University, she was a member of the Physics Research Committee and the Kuwait University Academic Publication Council. She has also contributed to the development of the American University of Kuwait, serving on the Board of Trustees for 10 years. Currently, she is the Project Leader and Nuclear Data Evaluator for the Kuwait Nuclear Data Project and is a member on the “National Committee for Emergency Response to Radiological Incidents” at the Ministry of Health. She is also a member of the International Network of Nuclear Structure and Decay Data, the American Physical Society, and the American Academy for the Advancement of Science. Since 2015, she has served as a Jury member of “L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science-Middle East. She was a member of the scientific committee for the “International Conference of Women Leaders in Science, Technology, and Engineering” in 2007, and is currently the Chair of the Scientific committee for this year’s meeting.
Professor Farhan graduated from Kuwait University with Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and Physics. She received her Master’s of Science and doctoral degree in Theoretical Nuclear Physics from the Catholic University of America.
Her talents extend beyond the field of scientific research, she has an eye for fine art, designs her own jewelry, and her culinary skills are appreciated by all who know her.
