Dr. Layla Al-Musawi

General Coordinator

Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences (KFAS)

Dr Al-Musawi is the program manager for Publicizing and Dissemination of Science and Technology, within the Scientific Culture Directorate at the Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences. The program advocates scientific literacy and culture, and aims at engaging the society in STEM issues, utilizing themes of immediate relevance for every member of the society, as well as modern channels of dissemination.

Dr. Al-Musawi has also served as the Monitoring and Evaluation Advisor to the Director General of the International Center for Biosaline Agriculture (ICBA), and was the team leader of the Kuwait Food Security and Investment Strategy, developed by ICBA, for the Kuwait Investment Authority (KIA). Prior to that, she served as the Scientific Consultant to the Regional Organization to Protect the Marine Environment (ROPME) in Kuwait, and was then assigned the ROPME Program Manger coordinating all technical projects and programs undertaken by the Organization.

Dr Al-Musawi was also extensively involved in the Kuwait Environmental Rehabilitation Program (KERP) to remediated war related damages, funded by the United Nation Compensation Commission (UNCC). She has also worked with UNEP/ROWA as an Individual Consultant. She was the lead author to realign Kuwait’s National Strategy and Action Plan (NAP) with the 10-Year Strategy of the United Nation Convention to Combat Desertification. She was also the lead author on developing the Thematic Position Paper for National Consultation on Climate Change, Environment and Resilience, in preparation for United Nations Development Program, Kuwait Country Program Document. As part of her community service, Dr. Al-Musawi is an active member of the Kuwait Environmental Society (KEPS), sitting on the Biological Diversity Committee, and helping with the dive team projects to restore coral reefs in Kuwait.

Dr. Al-Musawi received her doctoral degree in Biological Sciences from Albert-Lüdwig University, Freiburg in Germany. She received her Master’s Degree from The Ohio State University is in Behavioral Ecology, and a Bachelor of Science from Kuwait University in Zoology.
