Overview

The heritage and future of the GCC is entwined with its proximity to the sea. Most of the GCC capitals and major cities are located on maritime trade route. The modern urban development and key oil sector installations are hugging the low coastal line. Furthermore, desalination is the major source of water for the entire region.

With climate change, it is expected that future increases in climatic variability will lead to adverse impacts on a number of vulnerable ecosystems. Many regional conferences have addressed the considerable stress due to human practices such as overfishing, pollution and runoff, habitat destruction and degradation, lack of proper management protocols, and coastal and global population pressures. With the latest data from melting arctic ice cap, emphasizes the need consider the global impact of climate change, and the general overall warming of the planetary atmosphere, on the threat of sea level rise, the problem of ocean acidification, the increasing sea surface temperature and the depletion of oxygen.
