Climate Change poses a serious and sustained threat to global development. Oil producing countries in the region face risks from the planned climate change measures that may carry potential impacts to their economic welfare and prosperity. This talk will provide an overview on potential climate change impacts, the adaptations and generating discussions on areas relevant to Kuwait in means of opportunities in Kuwait’s development and economic growth plans.
As the most water scarce, food insecure, hydrocarbon independent, and energy subsidized region in the world, the middle east and north Africa region, MNA, is highly vulnerable to natural and economic shocks associated with climate change impacts such as sea level rise, increase in frequency and severity of heat waves and sand storms, and changes in precipitation. At the same time, while being at risk of climate change impacts, oil producing countries in the region, whose economies depend on oil and gas exports, face additional risks from the planned climate change measures that may carry potential impacts to their economic welfare and prosperity. This presentation will provide an overview of potential climate change impacts; highlight the critical need for adaptation globally and in the region in particular and provide examples of win-win options. This session will seek to generate discussion with the audience on areas that are most relevant to Kuwait in terms of opportunities for enhancing Kuwait’s resilience to the impacts of climate change in its development and economic growth plans.
